Tropical Storm Beryl Knocks Out Texas Power

Earliest recorded as a Category 5 hurricane, Beryl weakens near land but still remains destructive.

Tropical Storm Beryl slammed southeast Texas on Monday, flooding large swaths of land, knocking out power at 2.7 million buildings, and killing at least three people. Houston Mayor John Whitmire said that the flood waters exceeded 10 inches across most of the city and that rescue efforts are ongoing.

“We’re literally getting calls across Houston right now asking for first responders to come rescue individuals in desperate life safety conditions,” Whitmire said.

Beryl became America’s earliest recorded Category 5 hurricane as it passed over the Gulf of Mexico last week, though it weakened to a tropical storm before it landed in the contiguous U.S. The storm is continuing to weaken as it travels north, becoming a tropical depression as it reached southern Ohio on Tuesday.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the U.S. National Weather Service as it records the weather patterns affecting the U.S.
  • That the Biden administration remains vigilant as the 2024 hurricane season develops.
  • That the Lord guides first responders as they help Texas residents recover from the storm.
